Mediaplanet has launched its Disaster Preparedness campaign in USA TODAY and through its Impacting Our Future digital content hub, offering guidance on natural disasters, cyber disruptions and recovery for individuals, families, small businesses and communities. The campaign arrives as the United States recorded 27 weather and climate disasters causing at least $1 billion in damage during 2024, with estimated losses of $182.7 billion. It brings together organizations including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Team Rubicon, the U.S. Small Business Administration, World Central Kitchen and Baby2Baby. The campaign became available September 25, 2026.
Physical and Digital Risks
The campaign covers the disaster lifecycle, from preparedness before an emergency through staying connected during an event and recovery afterward. Its materials address practical resilience measures for homes and businesses, emergency communication plans, insurance coverage, deductibles, disaster assistance and preparations for cyber disruptions affecting critical information and systems.
Additional topics include advance planning, supplies and community partnerships, as well as long-term recovery needs involving housing, economic stability, children and families. The initiative places digital readiness alongside preparations for hurricanes, floods, wildfires and severe storms.
Weather Disaster Costs
The campaign cites data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showing that the United States has experienced 403 billion-dollar weather and climate disasters since 1980. NOAA historical data puts the annual average at 3.1 billion-dollar disasters during the 1980s, compared with 12.8 per year during the 2010s.
Cyberattacks, technology disruptions and loss of access to critical digital systems are also included in the campaign’s view of emergency planning, reflecting the potential for disruption to businesses, services and communications.
Resources for Readiness
Mediaplanet’s campaign assembles perspectives from organizations involved in business, disaster response, insurance, philanthropy and family support. Available in USA TODAY and online through Impacting Our Future, the resource focuses on practical actions that can help individuals, businesses and communities prepare, respond and recover when disruptions occur.
