Privacy policy

The Review is read, not signed up to. Nobody needs an account to open a story, and we keep very little about the people who do. What follows sets out that little, and the say each reader has over it.

Who is responsible

The Manhattan Business Review is published by its editor, Tobias Hutchins, who is answerable for the personal information described here. Letters on any privacy matter go to editor@tmbusinessnyc.org. The Review keeps no mailing address for readers; the editor's inbox is the one way in.

What we keep

Letters to the editor. A reader who writes in with news, a correction or a question gives us a name, an email address and whatever the message holds. We keep that correspondence so the editor can answer and, where a story is concerned, follow the matter through.

Server logs. Our host records the ordinary details of each request for a page, such as the IP address, the browser and the address asked for. Those records exist to keep the site running and safe from abuse.

Beyond that there is nothing. The Review runs no analytics and no advertising, has no comment section and no subscriber list, and has never sold or traded a reader's details.

On what basis

Correspondence is kept on the basis of our legitimate interest in replying to readers and getting the record right. The server logs rest on the same footing: a publication has a fair need to keep its pages online and protected.

For how long

Letters are held for up to two years from the most recent message in the exchange and are then deleted, except where a correction or a story under discussion remains unresolved. Our host keeps its request logs for a short period only, then discards them.

Who handles it on our behalf

Vercel hosts the Review's pages and keeps the request logs described above.

Google Workspace, arranged for us through Zapmail, runs the editor's mailbox, so letters to the editor are delivered and stored there.

Both companies may process this information in the United States. Each relies on the safeguards United Kingdom data protection law recognises for transfers of that kind.

Your rights

Any reader may ask what the Review holds about them and receive a copy, including one in a form they can take to another service. A reader may also have details corrected or erased, ask us to restrict their use, or object to it. Send the request to editor@tmbusinessnyc.org; the editor replies within one month.

A reader who remains dissatisfied may take the matter to the UK Information Commissioner's Office, through ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or by telephone on 0303 123 1113. We would ask for the chance to settle it first.
